脑具有思维、想象意念、记忆、智愚、感知、运动知觉、语言等生理功能。神明其体在脑其用在心,心脑协同共主神明。脑病一般是指脑所在头部的病证，与脑有关的五官病证，神志昏迷或神志异常的病证，心神蒙昧或精神心理有关等病证，与运动知觉异常有关的病证。郁证性脑病是指凡由情志不遂所引起或加重的脑病,如部分头痛、眩晕、耳鸣脑鸣、不寐、多寐、健忘、痴呆、一时痴笑、癫狂、痫症、颤证、郁厥、中风等;既有单纯郁证又有病郁同存,既有因郁致病又有因病致郁;治疗需要从郁论治,包括从肝论治、从心论治、从肾论治;具体包括疏肝解郁、清肝泻肝、熄风潜阳、养肝柔肝、益心养心、清心泻火、豁痰祛瘀开窍、安神定志、补肾益精填髓、交通心肾等。
