The key to applying systematic thoughts and methods in the research of polygenic, complicated diseases is to adopt the holistic strategy of Chinese medicine, in which the pathological and physiological characteristics are grasped as a whole, using top-down analysis to discover the outbreak and progression mechanism on the molecular level. Systems biology, meeting the requirement for treating polygenic, complicated diseases, can give Chinese medicine advantages a full play to achieve the integration with western modern medicine.
