To investigate the clinical effects of Guben Pingchuan Huatan Decoctionon in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Methods: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were randomly divided into treatment group and control group, with 25 patients in each group. The control group was given conventional western medicine treatment, while the treatment group was additionally treated with Guben Pingchuan Huatan Decoction. The clinical efficacy, acute exacerbation, blood gas index, serum CRP and serum PCT level were compared between the two groups. Results: The clinical curative effect of the treatment group was significantly better than that of the control group, and the number of acute exacerbation was significantly lower than that of the control group (χ2=4.5，t=1.843，P<0.05). After treatment, the pCO2 of the treatment group was significantly lower than that of the control group and pO2, FVC, FEV1% and PEF were significantly higher than those in the control group (t=5.590, t=2.907, t=2.169, t=2.980, t=1.952, P<0.01, P<0.05). The levels of serum CRP and PCT after treatment were significantly lower in the treatment group than those in the control group (t=1.952，t=1.747，P<0.05). Conclusion: The Guben Pingchuan Huatan Decoction has a great effect in treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in stable period. It can effectively improve the clinical symptoms of patients to prevent acute attacks and is valuable for clinical application.
