Hippophae rhamnoides Linn., as a kind of characteristic plant with both economic and social benefits, is known as “natural vitamin treasure house”,“source of nutrition and health care” and so on. Hippophae rhamnoides L.has been found the effect of expelling phlegm to arrest coughing, promoting digestion to eliminate stagnation and promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis as early as the 8th century AD. Studies have shown that plants of Hippophae L.contain flavonoids,terpenoids, volatile oils, and steroidal compounds, also contain lots of vitamins, polysaccharide, fatty acids and trace elements necessary for human body biological active substances, which have a good therapeutic effect such as on the cardiovascular system, blood system, digestive system, immune system and respiratory system disease. In order to further explore the genetic relationship of Hippophae L., this review summarized the traditional medicinal value, chemical composition and modern pharmacological activities of Hippophae L., and searched for the correlation among the them on this basis, so as to provide the basis for the effective development and rational utilization of the resources of Hippophae L.
