Metabolic syndrome(MS) is a clinical condition characterized by a cluster of pathologies, including obesity, high blood glucose(diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance),dyslipidemia(elevated triglycerides and/or reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol),and hypertension, which seriously affects the body health. These abnormalities in metabolism can lead to the development of various cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases due to the aggregation of multiple risk factors such as atherosclerosis.Professor Ni Qing believes that MS patients may suffer from impaired gastrointestinal function due to poor dietary habits, leading to the accumulation of endogenous phlegm-dampness and blood stasis, which stagnates in the stomach, intestine, and triple energizer, causing dysfunction of the six Fu organs.Damage to the six Fu organs is the primary pathology in obese patients with MS,whose disease progression can be summarized as initial impairment of viscera qi,followed by organ and viscera diseases, and ultimately the development of systemic disease. This is consistent with modern medical research on the imbalance of gut microbiota and brain-gut-microbiota axis in MS patients.Professor Ni believes that since MS involves multiple abnormalities in human metabolic indicators, treatment should leverage the advantages of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),taking into account the overall concept, combining disease and syndrome, analyzing the relevance of various abnormal metabolic indicators, weighing the pros and cons, and using appropriate drugs and prescriptions in clinical practice, with emphasis on the treatment of the six Fu organs and advocating the use of combined prescriptions.
