Since the proposal of the Belt and Road Initiative, the economic and trade exchanges between China and other countries along the Belt and Road have become increasingly common. As an important part of the Belt and Road Initiative, traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) plays an important role in safeguarding human health. The Belt and Road Initiative has provided an unprecedented opportunity for the overseas development of TCM.According to the characteristics of TCM development environment,we classified the 35 countries along the Belt and Road into four groups based on their development in seven dimensions:economy and market, population, politics and law, culture and education, medical treatment and public health, infrastructure, and physical geography. The countries of the four groups promote TCM development, enhance the cooperation in TCM,develop characteristic TCM,and make breakthroughs in TCM,respectively.According to the different TCM development patterns,we put forward differentiated TCM development strategies. For the first group, efforts should be made to strengthen the promotion and develop TCM brands. The countries enhancing cooperation in TCM should deepen the international cooperation to accelerate the development and dissemination of TCM.The countries developing characteristic TCM should strengthen inter-governmental cooperation and support key projects. The countries of the last group should strengthen cultural exchanges of TCM and properly control investment risks. This paper provides reference for governments and relevant departments to formulate TCM internationalization strategy and relevant enterprises and institutions to develop TCM overseas.
