This paper systematically analyzed the origin of abortion and miscarriage in traditional Chinese medicine books.The understanding of abortion and miscarriage was gradually clear from Qin and Han to Ming and Qing.The etiology and pathogenesis of abortion and miscarriage were summarized into seven categories：constitutional deficiency，qi and blood deficiency，intemperance in sexual life，moodiness，irregular life，predominant blood stasis，and improper diet.The treatment principles were mainly tonifying middle and replenishing qi，cooling blood and tonifying deficiency，tonifying blood and replenishing qi，regulating qi and dissipating stasis，and tonifying kidney and preventing abortion.This paper facilitated the reference and clinical guidance.
