Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) has accumulated very rich experience in health preservation,anti-aging and prolonging life.During the “Fourteenth Five-Year Plan” in China, there is a strong emphasis on the development of TCM services for the elderly, training and popularizing appropriate TCM technologies, and enhancing distinctive service abilities of TCM.Modern researches demonstrate that characteristic TCM therapies including acupuncture, medical massage, acupoint catgut embedding, cupping, and herbal formulations have certain anti-aging effects. The anti-aging effects of acupuncture and moxibustion are mainly reflected in improving cognitive function, enhancing immunologic function, improving reproductive function, increasing bone density and alleviating skin aging.Acupoint catgut embedding,in addition to above effects, can also be used to address postmenopausal obesity.Medical massage can enhance immunologic function and bone density as well as alleviate skin aging.Cupping and herbal formulations mainly play a role in improving immunologic function and relieving skin aging. All the above-described characteristic therapies and traditional health-preserving exercises can improve old people's senile symptoms and enhance their life quality in clinical application.Although there are many relevant studies, most of them focused on the pharmacodynamic animal experiments, and there are problems of low-level repetition,as well as a lack of systematic,profound,cutting-edge,innovative,targeted,diverse and authoritative aspects, particularly lack of high-level clinical studies. There is room for improvement in scheme design, model establishment, index selection, experimental techniques and other aspects. In the future,it is necessary to strengthen the clinical research on characteristic TCM therapy for anti-aging,improving the evaluation index system, and contributing the strength of TCM to the goal of a healthy China.
