Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) has demonstrated significant efficacy in the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases,including metabolic-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD).This review explores various aspects of TCM in the management of MAFLD,including its TCM nomenclature,etiology and pathogenesis,syndrome differentiation,and constitution classification.Additionally,it summarizes treatment approaches such as Chinese herbal decoctions,Chinese patent medicines,and non-pharmacological therapies.The therapeutic principles of resolving phlegm and removing stasis,nourishing the liver and kidney,soothing the liver and strengthening the spleen,and resolving dampness and clearing heat are discussed in detail.Furthermore,research progress in TCM-related MAFLD studies,including animal models,single herbs and active components,and compound formulas,is reviewed.This study aims to provide insights and references for future research on TCM-based MAFLD prevention and treatment.
