Lung cancer has the highest incidence among cancers in China, and traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) interventions can significantly improve patients' quality of life.Professor LIU Shangyi,a TCM master, has developed an innovative approach to the treatment of lung cancer based on classical principles.Prof.LIU categorizes lung cancer “membrane disease” into three progressive stages,i.e.,membrane itching, membrane ulceration, and membrane erosion with bleeding, based on local lesions, systemic symptoms, and the course of the disease. He proposes nine TCM syndromes, namely external wind syndrome,phlegm-dampness syndrome,dampness-heat syndrome, yang deficiency syndrome, combined wind-phlegm syndrome, combined phlegm-blood stasis syndrome, yin deficiency with internal heat syndrome, reckless movement of blood due to blood heat syndrome, and qi and yin deficiency syndrome. In clinical practice,he regards “lung governing the skin and hair” as the fundamental pathogenesis, with wind, phlegm, stasis, and toxin as key pathological factors. His treatment is based on the self-formulated anti-tumor decoction Jiashu Ercao Decoction, characterized by syndrome differentiation from the perspective of the lung membrane, unique herbal selection, and remarkable clinical efficacy. This approach has greatly enriched the TCM clinical strategies for treating lung cancer,a complex and challenging condition
