Professor NAN Zheng,a traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) master, has developed a distinctive theoretical system for the differentiation and treatment of consumptive thirst disease, with core concepts deeply rooted in manifestation thinking,a unique cognitive model in TCM.This approach emphasizes observing external disease manifestations to infer internal pathological changes, thereby forming a dynamic and holistic diagnostic and therapeutic strategy that aligns with the TCM principles of “correspondence between heaven and humanity” and “following the laws of nature”.Integrating classical knowledge with modern clinical experience,Professor NAN posits that the core pathological site of consumptive thirst disease lies in the dispersed fat, with a fundamental mechanism characterized by yin deficiency and dryness-heat as the manifestation.Internally generated dryness-heat depletes bodily fluids, leading to impaired fluid transformation and distribution, which presents clinically as thirst, dryness, and other hallmark symptoms of consumptive thirst disease.Professor NAN further argues that consumptive thirst disease is not merely a superficial manifestation, but a deeper dysfunction of the spleen and stomach, wherein the source lack of fluid transformation and generation leads to impaired spleen qi transport and disruption of dispersed fat function. His therapeutic principle emphasizes both attacking and tonifying, and addressing both root and manifestation.Specifically,he advocates “regulating dispersed fat” as the key treatment strategy. In addressing key pathological links such as qi deficiency and blood stasis during disease progression,he proposes a comprehensive approach that combines nourishing yin and clearing heat, tonifying qi and nourishing yin,and promoting blood circulation to resolve stasis. This integrated approach has demonstrated notable clinical efficacy. This paper, based on manifestation thinking, explores Professor NAN Zheng's theoretical understanding of the disease location, pathogenesis, therapeutic principles, treatment methods, and medication strategies for consumptive thirst disease, providing valuable theoretical support and clinical guidance for the TCM treatment of consumptive thirst disease
