Arousal promotion in patients with disorders of consciousness(DOC) remains one of the pressing challenges in clinical practice, and acupuncture and moxibustion have become commonly used therapies for awakening interventions. This paper summarizes studies from the past decade on acupuncture and moxibustion treatment for DOC,discussing aspects such as traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) etiology and pathogenesis, clinical applications(including therapeutic efficacy, acupoint selection, and manipulation techniques),and mechanisms of action. The results indicate that acupuncture and moxibustion are indeed effective in improving DOC.The most frequently used acupoints include Baihui(GV20),Well points, and crossing points, with the “brain-awakening and orifice-opening” acupuncture method being the predominant technique.Acupuncture and moxibustion exert its awakening effects through various mechanisms, such as enhancing cerebral blood flow, activating multiple brain networks, reducing inflammatory mediators, alleviating cerebral edema, and influencing neurotransmitter release. The findings aim to provide a reference for the clinical application and basic research of acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of DOC
