Systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE) is an autoimmune disease involving multiple systems based on immune cell dysfunction and autoantibody production. Its specific pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated. At present, clinical treatment mainly depends on traditional medicines, but it is often difficult to achieve satisfactory results due to its unavoidable adverse reactions, such as abdominal obesity and susceptibility to infection. In contrast, the combination of Western and traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) can effectively reduce side effects and improve the curative effect.Studies have found that the following signaling pathways play a key regulatory role in SLE pathogenesis:Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription(JAK/STAT),Wnt/β-catenin,mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR),nuclear factor κB(NF-κB),Toll-like receptors(TLRs),and others.Additionally,TCM has beneficial effects, including oxidative stress reduction,anti-fibrosis,excessive autophagy inhibition, and anti-inflammation,which are realized by regulating the above signaling pathways. With characteristics of multi-target and multi-mechanism,TCM treatment is of ideal safety and tolerance, becoming an important part of current clinical treatment for SLE.
