Comparative effectiveness research (CER) was launched and released by the Western developed countries in order to promote health reform， reduce health care costs and change clinical research priorities and direction. The central concerns of CER are efficacy， safety and cost. This article mainly introduced the background， definitions， contents and implementation steps of CER， which maybe provide new ideas and guidance for clinical research of traditional Chinese medicine.
