PFD is caused by the injury of pelvic floor muscles, connective tissue or pelvic floor muscle fiber and functional deterioration or coordination disorder. Symptoms of PFD include dyssynergic defecation, fecal incontinence (FI), bladder overactivity (OAB), urinary incontinence (UI), pelvic organ prolapse (POP), hemorrhoids, sexual dysfunction, chronic urinary retention and chronic pelvic pain.
