Abstract:The book of Dian Kuang Tiao Bian is the first systematically monograph on treating mental illness. Considering phlegm as the core pathogenesis, it discussed the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, nursing and prognosis of manic-depressive psychosis, and illustrated the pathological changes of phlegm heat transmission among zang-fu organs (viscera). It treated depressive psychosis with warming the middle (a therapeutic method to treat yang deficiency of the spleen and stomach with warm-tonifying medicinals) and resolving phlegm, and treated mania with clearing heat and resolving phlegm. The treatment also differed according to the organ the phlegm heat harmed. Additionally, it pointed out the mutual transformation between depressive psychosis and mania, and nursing method of rehabilitation, enriching the theoretical system of Traditional Chinese Medicine on mental diseases.
