Based on the clinical features of systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE) in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) and western medicine and the research literature of animal models of SLE in China and abroad, the present study evaluated the clinical coincidence of existing models according to clinical diagnostic criteria. The comparative analysis indicated that the MRL/lpr mouse model among spontaneous mouse models and the pristane-induced model among induced models had the highest coincidence of clinical disease and syndrome of TCM and western medicine. At present, however,SLE animal models are mostly induced based on the etiological characteristics of western medicine, lacking the TCM characteristics of a combination of disease and syndrome, and the coincidence in TCM is low. Therefore,on the basis of existing research, increasing the TCM intervention factors, highlighting the advantages of TCM syndrome differentiation, and strengthening the relevant research on TCM syndrome differentiation of SLE are the focuses of follow-up research.
