To analyze the frequency, combination, and association rules of Chinese medicines used by physicians in the Ming and Qing dynasties via data mining and explore the core medicinal combinations and new prescriptions for the treatment of vertigo. Methods:The articles about the treatment of vertigo during the Ming and Qing dynasties were retrieved from Chinese Medical Dictionary. The prescriptions for the treatment of vertigo were extracted from the articles and input into the Traditional Chinese Medicine Inheritance Support System. The medication rules of the prescriptions were analyzed by rules analysis and unsupervised entropy hierarchical clustering. Results:A total of 152 prescriptions for treating vertigo during the Ming and Qing dynasties were screened out, involving 219 Chinese medicines. There were 21 Chinese medicines with the use frequency≥20,14 medicinal combinations with the frequency≥18,and 10 potential core medicinal combinations. Finally,we obtained five new prescriptions after evolution analysis of these medicines. Conclusion:A large proportion of physicians in the Ming and Qing Dynasties considered that occurrence of vertigo was attributed to phlegm. Therefore, they focused on the removal of phlegm while protecting spleen, replenishing qi,and nourishing the liver and kidney in the treatment of vertigo based on syndrome differentiation.
