Cyclocarya paliurus,a fast-growing tree of Juglandaceae,is mainly distributed in the southern subtropical mountains of China. It is a unique precious tree species in China, and it has been widely planted in China. The earliest record of C.paliurus for the medicinal purpose was found in the National Collection of Chinese Herbal Medicines published in 1975,and later this plant was successively included in Chinese herbal monographs such as Chinese Herbal Medicine Resources and Chinese Materia Medica and four local herbal medicine standards. However, there is no unified standard for the medicinal parts, harvest time, nature, taste, channel tropism, functions, indications, usage or dosage. The recorded functions and indications have differences from the actual applications, with the lack of constantly summarization and in-time updating following the clinical progress. In particular, the lack of the “formula-syndrome-symptom” system makes it difficult to guide the clinical application and rational administration of C.paliurus.The leaves of C.paliurus have been used as tea for more than 500 years, and they were included in the new resource food list by the National Health Commission in 2013.Therefore,C.paliurus is a plant with both edible and medicinal values. This article reviews the clinical applications and experimental studies of C.paliurus to summarize the research achievements regarding this plant.According to the thinking of traditional Chinese medicine, this paper explores and enriches the medicinal properties and summarizes the functions and indications of this plant to provide guidance for unifying and upgrading the standard and the rational compatibility and application of this plant based on syndrome differentiation.Based on the new clinical applications, probing into the properties of C.paliurus is of great significance for expanding the value and improving the application of C.paliurus for serving the public health.
