Hormone-induced femoral head necrosis is the most common type of non-traumatic femoral head necrosis, accounting for up to 1/3 of such cases.Current treatments are inadequate in effectively delaying the progression of this disease, and hip replacement surgery often becomes the only option for advanced cases. Therefore, developing a new hip-preserving treatment to alleviate the suffering and economic burden on patients is an urgent challenge.Recent research has shown a close connection between the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B(PI3K/AKT) signaling pathway and hormone-induced femoral head necrosis.Medications targeting the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway have demonstrated significant efficacy in treating this condition.Chinese herbal medicine,a hallmark of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) science, offers multi-target,low-cost,and low-side-effect therapies. With the ongoing advancement in TCM pharmacology, many Chinese herbal monomers and formulas with functions such as tonifying the kidneys, strengthening bones, activating blood circulation, and resolving blood stasis have been proven effective in treating hormone-induced femoral head necrosis through the regulation of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.
